Michel Crespin started his career in 1977 in the French science fiction magazine Métal Hurlant. A couple of years later, he created his first big comic, 'Armalite 16', a typical post-apocalyptic story. During his career he used more and more watercolor techniques, which can be seen in 'Troubadour', his series situated in the Middle Ages. After one-shots like 'Faust' and 'L'Évangile de Marc' he made 'Élie', a venture into manga for the Japanese market, which was also published by Casterman for the French market.
